The 1975 is an English pop rock group that was founded in Wilmslow, Cheshire, in 2002. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist Matthew “Matty” Healy, lead guitarist Adam Hann, bassist Ross MacDonald, and drummer George Daniel make up the group, which is now based in Manchester. The band members first played together as teenagers after becoming friends in high school. The band signed with Dirty Hit and Polydor Records after performing at gigs coordinated by a council employee. Before releasing their UK chart-topping self-titled debut album (2013), which features the smash singles “Sex,” “Chocolate,” and “Robbers,” they performed as opening acts for a number of well-known performers and released a series of extended plays (Facedown, Sex, Music for Cars, IV) from 2012 to 2013.
The band released their third studio album, A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships (2018), to critical acclaim, and it became their third No. 1 album in the UK. Their second album, I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It (2016), peaked at No. 1 in the UK, US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Notes on a Conditional Form (2020), their fourth album, became their fourth straight UK No. 1 album. Being Funny in a Foreign Language (2022), their fifth studio album, was well-received and went to No. 1 in the UK for the fifth time in a row.
