Echo & the Bunnymen is an English rock band that was established in 1978 in Liverpool. The initial lineup included Ian McCulloch on vocals, Will Sergeant on guitar, and Les Pattinson on bass. Pete de Freitas joined the band as drummer in 1980.
Crocodiles, their debut album released in 1980, reached the top 20 of the UK Albums Chart. Following the release of their second album Heaven Up Here in 1981, the band’s cult notoriety was followed by mainstream success in the UK in 1983, when they had a UK Top 10 hit with “The Cutter,” and the album from which the song came, Porcupine, reached number two. Ocean Rain (1984), extended the band’s chart success in the United Kingdom, with its lead song “The Killing Moon” reaching the top ten.
McCulloch quit the band after the publication of their self-titled album in 1987 and was replaced by singer Noel Burke. De Freitas was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1989. McCulloch and Sergeant reformed with Pattinson as Echo & the Bunnymen in 1997, after working together as Electrafixion. Pattinson left the band in 1998. Since the late 1990s, the band has done some touring and released numerous albums to varied degrees of success.
