He rose to prominence as the frontman and lyricist of the rock band The Smiths from 1982 to 1987. Since then, he’s enjoyed a successful solo career. Morrissey’s music is defined by his baritone voice and unconventional lyrics about emotional seclusion, sexual longing, self-deprecating and dark humor, and anti-establishment sentiments.

Morrissey was chosen as the second-greatest living British cultural figure in a BBC Culture Show survey in 2006. His work has been studied academically.
