After the breakup of his former band, Dreve, singer Brent Smith started the American rock group Shinedown in Jacksonville, Florida. Brad Stewart on bass, Jasin Todd on guitar, and Barry Kerch on drums made comprised the band’s original lineup when Smith, who was still bound by his recording deal with Atlantic Records, sought them out. After remaining constant for the first two album cycles, there were multiple band changes in the late 2000s, but Smith and Kerch along with Zach Myers on guitar and Eric Bass on bass ultimately stabilized. Leave a Whisper (2003), Us and Them (2005), The Sound of Madness (2008), Amaryllis (2012), Threat to Survival (2015), Attention Attention (2018), and Planet Zero are the group’s seven studio albums (2022).
With 18, Shinedown holds the record for most number-one singles on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts. Additionally, each of their singles has charted in the top five. Shinedown was also voted first by Billboard on the Greatest of All Time Mainstreams Rock Artists chart, which was released to commemorate the Mainstream Rock Chart’s 40th Anniversary, on June 3, 2021. The group has sold more than 10 million records globally as of this writing.
