Wyn Starks, who was born and raised in Minneapolis, always had a strong affinity for music and knew that he wanted to be a singer. Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, and Prince were among the musicians who had a big impact on him, and he also loved the pop, soul, and R&B sounds, as well as Gospel music. He sang in church as a child and later spent some time touring as a gospel backup singer. Yet, he began to sense a pull to expand as an artist and write his own songs outside of Gospel music.
Six months after relocating to Nashville, Starks received a record deal with Curb Records and joined the roster of Sidewalk Records, a Curb-affiliated company that also features more pop/soul musicians. Starks decided to come there on the recommendation of a friend because he felt the need to live somewhere as varied as his art. Because he was in such a diverse environment, he began collaborating with other songwriters with whom he related artistically and who helped him grow as a songwriter and expand his approach. By surrounding himself with a diverse set of people who had a range of opinions and ideologies, he was able to grow both personally and professionally as an artist.
Starks recently felt at ease revealing his sexual orientation as queer, and he has since been living authentically ever since. With his 2020 debut EP, Who I Am, he released his first single “Circles” in 2019. Tracks from the EP were included on American Idol, and “Dancing My Way” was featured on the popular CBS show Love Island. His sound evolved to incorporate songs on justice and racial equality because he has always had a passion for social and racial equality, all the while preserving his distinctive fusion of traditional soul and progressive pop sounds.
