Solange Piaget Knowles (/soln/; born June 24, 1986) is a singer, songwriter, performance artist, and actor from the United States. Knowles expressed an early interest in music and worked as a backup dancer for Destiny’s Child, which included her elder sister, Beyoncé Knowles, before signing with her father Mathew Knowles’ Music World Entertainment firm. Knowles released her first studio album Solo Star (2002) when she was 16 years old. She was also in the movies Johnson Family Vacation (2004) and Bring It On: All or Nothing (2006).
Knowles resumed recording songs in 2007. Her second studio album Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams (2008), heavily influenced by Motown girl groups, departed from the pop-oriented songs of her debut to Motown-inspired sounds from the 1960s and 1970s. It reached number nine on the Billboard 200 in the United States and earned favorable reviews from reviewers. True (2012), an extended play inspired by 1980s pop and R&B, was released on Terrible Records and her imprint Saint Records. Her third studio album, A Seat at the Table (2016), debuted at number one in the United States and received worldwide critical praise. The album’s lead hit “Cranes in the Sky” won the Grammy for Best R&B Performance. When I Get Home, her fourth studio album was released in March 2019 to tremendous praise.
