The Pet Shop Boys are an English synth-pop duo that was established in 1981 in London. They have sold over 50 million records worldwide and were named the most successful duo in UK music history in the 1999 edition of The Guinness Book of Records. They are comprised of principal vocalist Neil Tennant and keyboardist Chris Lowe.
Since 1984, they have achieved 42 top 30 singles, 22 of which have been top 10 hits on the UK Singles Chart, including four UK number ones: “West End Girls” (also number one on the US Billboard Hot 100), “It’s a Sin”, a synth-pop version of “Always on My Mind”, and “Heart”. Other big songs include a rendition of “Go West,” their original “Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots of Money),” and a duet with Dusty Springfield on “What Have I Done to Deserve This?” They are identified with the Second British Invasion since they had five top ten songs in the United States in the 1980s.
The Pet Shop Boys got an award for Outstanding Contribution to Music at the 2009 Brit Awards in London. Billboard magazine awarded the Pet Shop Boys the number-one dance duo/group in 40 years from the chart’s launch in 1976 in 2016. The pair earned the NME’s Godlike Genius Award in 2017.
