Timothy Lee McKenzie (born 4 January 1989) is a British singer, rapper, songwriter, and record producer better known by his stage name Labrinth. Despite initially pursuing a career in music production, Simon Cowell signed him to his record label Syco Music as a recording artist, making him the first vocalist signed by Cowell in six years who had not competed in a talent competition. Before releasing his first solo single, “Let the Sun Shine,” in September 2010, Labrinth collaborated with English rapper Tinie Tempah, appearing as an uncredited featured artist on the single “Pass Out,” and later officially on “Frisky”; all three of which peaked in the top five on the UK Singles Chart.
He has been regarded to as “one of the most influential British musicians of his generation.” Labrinth has worked with various artists as a songwriter and producer including Beyoncé, Kanye West, and the Weeknd. His work on the Weeknd’s album Beauty Behind the Madness garnered him a Grammy Award nomination for Album of the Year. He also co-produced The Lion King: The Gift soundtrack and co-wrote the single “Spirit” with Beyoncé and Ilya Salmanzadeh, for which he got Grammy, Golden Globe, and Critics’ Choice Movie Award nominations.
