Kwame Alexander (born August 21, 1968) is a poet and children’s fiction writer from the United States. His poetry novel The Crossover earned the Newbery Medal in 2015 and was named a Coretta Scott King Honor Book.

Acoustic Rooster and His Barnyard Band, Alexander’s picture book, was chosen for the 2014 “Michigan Reads! One State, One Children’s Book” initiative. He received a Newbery Honor in 2020 for his illustrated poetry The Undefeated.

Alexander directs the Bookinaday initiative, which teaches youngsters about writing and publishing. He is a frequent guest on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition.

Alexander was inspired by his trips to Ghana to write The Door of No Return, a historical verse book set in Ghana in 1861 and narrated through the eyes of an eleven-year-old boy named Koffi.
