American funk and soul group Commodores peaked in the late 1970s until the middle of the 1980s. The group’s members originally came to the public’s attention by opening for the Jackson 5 while on tour in 1968, while they were largely freshmen at Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University). They signed with Motown in November 1972.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, when Lionel Richie was a co-lead singer, the group saw its most prosperous time. Ballads like “Easy,” “Three Times a Lady,” and “Nightshift” and dance tunes with funk influences like “Brick House,” “Fancy Dancer,” “Lady (You Bring Me Up,” and “Too Hot ta Trot” are the band’s biggest hit hits.

The Alabama Music Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame both inducted the Commodores. Out of nine Grammy nominations, the band has also garnered one victory. Around 70 million albums by The Commodores have been sold globally.
