Bryan James Sledge, better known by his stage as BJ the Chicago Kid (or just BJ), is an American singer and songwriter. He was born on November 23, 1984. Sledge is most known for frequently working with Top Dawg Entertainment recording artists including Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Kendrick Lamar, and Jay Rock. He was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He has also collaborated with many other well-known rappers, including Joey Badass, Big K.R.I.T., GLC, Kanye West, Anderson.Paak, and Freddie Gibbs.
Sledge made his debut in the music business in 2001 with “For You,” a song co-written by Gerald Haddon and Dave Hollister. In February 2012, he independently released his debut studio album, Pineapple Now-Laters. Sledge’s vocals were first heard on a well-known track in 2006, a song by Chicago rapper Kanye West titled “Impossible,” released in promotion for the 2006 American film Mission: Impossible III. In August 2012, Sledge agreed to a record deal with Motown. The label then released “Good Luv’n,” a song by Pineapple Now-Laters, as Sledge’s first commercial single.
