Machine Girl, also known as machin3gir1, is a 2012 Long Island, New York-based electronic music project by American musician Matt Stephenson. The project changed to a duo in 2015 when Stephenson added drummer Sean Kelly to the lineup.
Machine Girl was described as “fucked-up electronic punk” in an interview with Revolver magazine by Stephenson, who also complained that the project was “a lot more colorful” than the term “industrial” implied. Kerrang! The project was referred to as “a particularly punky and violent strain of the electronic sub-genre breakcore that could easily pass for hardcore when they tear it live” and included as one of the “bands broadening the concept of hardcore”. Pitchfork classified their style as “relentlessly bashing together parts of punk, grindcore, rave, industrial, and more” and “unpredictable and dangerous, full of animalistic hatred and unrestrained energy”.
