Tove Lo (born Ebba Tove Elsa Nilsson on October 29, 1987) is a Swedish singer and songwriter. She has been labeled “Sweden’s darkest pop export” by Rolling Stone. She is well-known for her rough, grunge-influenced pop music. Her honest, complicated, and personal lyrical material has led to her being nicknamed “the saddest girl in Sweden”.
Lo grew up in Danderyd’s Djursholm area and attended the music school Rytmus Musikergymnasiet. In 2006, she founded the rock band Tremblebee. After the band split up, Lo pursued a career as a songwriter, landing a publishing agreement with Warner/Chappell Music in 2011.
Lo was signed to Universal Music, Island, and Polydor in 2013. Lo soared to notoriety the following year with her debut album, Queen of the Clouds, which debuted at number 14 on the Billboard 200. In October 2014, the Billboard 200 list was at its peak. It yielded the sleeper hit single “Habits (Stay High)”, which peaked at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100, as well as “Talking Body”. Lady Wood, her second album, was released in October 2016 and debuted at number 11 on the Billboard 200. Its main track, “Cool Girl,” became a worldwide smash. Her subsequent albums, Blue Lips (2017) and Sunshine Kitty (2019), did well as well, with the latter producing the song “Glad He’s Gone,” which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Music Video.
