Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson, better known by his stage name Tory Lanez, was born in Canada on July 27, 1992. He is a rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, and convicted felon. The mixtape Conflicts of My Soul: The 416 Story, which was released in August 2013, helped him gain his first notoriety. 2015 saw Tory Lanez join Mad Love Records, a label run by music producer Benny Blanco.
I Told You (2016), Lanez’s first studio album, featured the singles “Say It” and “Luv,” which respectively reached number 23 and 19 on the Billboard Hot 100. Memories Don’t Die and Love Me Now?, Lanez’s second and third studio albums, were both released in 2018. On the US Billboard 200, his fourth studio album Chixtape 5 (2019) peaked at number 2. The contentious reactions to the revelations that he had shot fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion earlier that year was included on his fifth studio album Daystar, which was released in 2020 and debuted at number 10 on the Billboard 200. In addition to four Juno Awards over the course of his career, Lanez received a Grammy Award nomination for his song “Luv” in 2016.
“Swavey is a two-adjective word. A lot of people use it as an attribute, but the real definition of swavey is a genre of music. I know it seems funny, but if you ask an artist what they do, they’ll reply that they rap, they sing, they play the guitar, they do rock. A lot of which are very much multi-talented. They are given bewildered looks, but I don’t believe they are. They seem to me to be merely gifted, wavey painters. Labels want to place you in one lane, but I feel that there are many artists who are more than that. Lanez lists Ray J and Brandy as some of his musical influences from when he was younger.
