They Might Be Giants (TMBG) is an American alternative rock band founded by John Flansburgh and John Linnell in 1982. Flansburgh and Linnell regularly played as a pair during TMBG’s early years, typically backed by a drum machine. TMBG grew to incorporate a backup band in the early 1990s. The pair has been recognized for helping to establish and expand Brooklyn’s thriving DIY music scene in the mid-1980s; the duo’s current backing band consists of Marty Beller, Dan Miller, and Danny Weinkauf.
The band is known for its distinct alternative music style, which includes weird, hilarious lyrics, experimental techniques, and uncommon instrumentation. They’ve had success on the modern rock and college radio charts throughout their career. They’ve also had success with children’s music, having released numerous instructional CDs, as well as theme music for television shows and films.
TMBG has produced 23 studio albums to date. Flood has received platinum certification, while their children’s music albums Here Come the ABCs, Here Come the 123s, and Here Comes Science have all received a gold certification. The band has received two Grammy Awards. They were nominated for a Tony Award for SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical’s Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics). They have sold over 4 million recordings in total.
