Zach Williams started writing songs for The Lone Bellow after learning that his wife had temporarily lost her ability to walk as a result of a horseback riding accident. Williams wrote in a journal to help him deal with the situation while his wife was getting better. Williams took up the guitar at the prompting of his friends and began writing songs based on the entries in his journal. His wife recovered, and they relocated to New York City.

The group signed with Descendant Records 2012, a newly established Sony Music subsidiary. In January 2013, the group released its self-titled debut, which was produced by Charlie Peacock. During the course of three days, it was recorded at the nearby NYC venue Rockwood Music Hall.

The album debuted on the Billboard 200 at position 64. According to Entertainment Weekly, it was “One of the top reasons to adore country music in 2013,” and People ranked it as the eighth-best album of the year. Ten separate Best of 2013 year-end lists included the album.
