The Flaming Lips are an American psychedelic rock band that formed in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1983. Wayne Coyne (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Steven Drozd (guitars, keyboards, bass, drums, vocals), Derek Brown (keyboards, guitars, percussion), Matt Duckworth Kirksey (drums, percussion, keyboards), and Nicholas Ley (percussion, drums) make up the current lineup. Coyne has been the band’s sole consistent member since the departure of long-time bassist Michael Ivins in 2021.
In the 1980s and early 1990s, the band released many albums and EPs on the indie label Restless. They released their first record with Warner Brothers, Hit to Death in the Future Head (1992), after joining the label. The popular track “She Don’t Use Jelly” from their 1993 album Transmissions from the Satellite Heart launched the band into the mainstream. They went on to release The Soft Bulletin (1999), which was named NME Magazine’s Album of the Year, and the critically acclaimed Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (2002). They were nominated for a BRIT Award for “Best International Act” in February 2007. The trio has received three Grammy Awards, two of which were for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. In 2002, they were named one of the “50 Bands to See Before You Die” by Q magazine.
