Jonathan (Jonny) Pierce and Jacob Graham met as children at a Bible camp when they were 11 or 12 years old. Years later, they established the short-lived electro-pop group Goat Explosion, which was later renamed Elkland. Golden, their debut album, was released in 2005, and the single “Apart” sparked curiosity.
Pierce and Graham came up with the idea for The Drums in 2008, and Pierce relocated to Kissimmee, Florida, where Graham was living at the time, so they could collaborate more easily. In the spring of 2009, they relocated to Brooklyn, where drummer Connor Hanwick and former Elkland guitarist Adam Kessler joined the band to round out their live sound. Within a week of arriving in Brooklyn, the band played its first show at Cake Shop NYC as part of the NYC Pop Fest. Summertime!, the band’s debut EP, was released in October 2009.
