The Animals (also known as Eric Burdon and the Animals) are an English rock band that started in the early 1960s in Newcastle upon Tyne. The Animals are known for their deep-voiced frontman Eric Burdon and their gritty, bluesy sound, which is exemplified by their signature song and transatlantic number-one hit single “The House of the Rising Sun” as well as hits such as “We Gotta Get Out of This Place”, “It’s My Life”, “Don’t Bring Me Down”, “I’m Crying”, “See See Rider” and “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood”. They were part of the British Invasion of the United States, balancing aggressive, rock-edged pop singles with rhythm-and-blues-oriented album material.
Burdon, Alan Price, Chas Chandler, Hilton Valentine, and John Steel reunited in 1968 for a one-off benefit concert in Newcastle. They made brief comebacks in 1975 and 1983. Since then, other partial regroupings of original-era members have happened under various identities. In 1994, The Animals were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
