The Afghan Whigs are a Cincinnati, Ohio-based American rock band. They were active as a band from 1986 through 2001 and have recently reunited. The band formed around the grunge movement, with founding members Greg Dulli (vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick McCollum (lead guitar), and John Curley (bass), expanding from a garage band in the spirit of the Replacements to integrate more R&B and soul elements into their sound and image. After self-releasing their debut album in 1988, the band signed with the Seattle-based label Sub Pop. Gentlemen, their major-label debut and fourth album, was released in 1993. In the 1990s, they were hailed as “one of the few alt-bands to flourish on a major label” by Pitchfork.
