The psychedelic music project of Australian multi-instrumentalist Kevin Parker is called Tame Impala. Parker composes, records, performs, and produces all of the music for the project in the studio. Parker (guitar, vocals), Dominic Simper (guitar, synthesiser), Jay Watson (synthesiser, vocals, guitar), Cam Avery (bass guitar, vocals), and Julien Barbagallo make up Tame Impala as a touring band (drums, vocals). With Pond, another Australian psychedelic rock band with which the group frequently collaborates and shares members, notably Nick Allbrook, a former live member of Tame Impala. Tame Impala, who was first signed to Modular Recordings, is currently a member of Fiction Records in the UK and Interscope Records in the US.
In 2007, Parker had the project’s initial conception in Perth. After releasing a number of singles and EPs, Tame Impala’s debut studio album, Innerspeaker, was released in 2010. It got favorable reviews from reviewers and was certified gold in Australia. Lonerism, Parker’s follow-up album from 2012, was likewise well-received; it was certified platinum in Australia and nominated for a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. Currents, the third album by Tame Impala, came out in July 2015 and, like its predecessor, it was nominated for Best Rock Album and Album of the Year ARIA Awards. Parker’s “Let It Happen,” the opening tune from Currents, took home the 2016 APRA Song of the Year Award. The Slow Rush, the fourth studio album, was made available on February 14, 2020. Tame Impala took home five awards at the 2020 ARIA Music Awards.
