Steve Thomas Lacy-Moya, an American singer-songwriter, musician, and record producer, was born on May 23, 1998. He became well-known for playing guitar in the alternative R&B group the Internet. He received a nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards for his debut studio album, Apollo XXI (2019). He appeared on Vampire Weekend’s “Sunflower” song from the same year. The song “Live Without Your Love,” which he later co-wrote with Calvin Harris (the stage name Love Regenerator), gave him a UK chart entry.
Gemini Rights (2022), his second studio album, reached its peak position on the Billboard 200 chart in the top 10. The album gave birth to the hit “Bad Habit,” which went viral on TikTok and was used as the soundtrack for over 400,000 videos there. It was Lacy’s first song to debut at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. His parent album received a nomination for Best Progressive R&B Album, and it earned him two Grammy Award nods for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
In 2018, rapper YG disclosed that Lacy had worked with him as a producer and had started using equipment other than his phone to create music. He was listed as having produced two songs on Solange’s album When I Get Home in March 2019. He confirmed the release date of Apollo XXI as May 24, 2019, in April after releasing the track “N Side” off the album. He released “Playground” and “Hate CD” as two additional singles the week after his album was published. The album received Lacy’s first Grammy nomination as a solo artist for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards.
The Lo-Fis, a compilation CD of Lacy’s early work, was published on December 4, 2020. On June 16, 2022, he released “Mercury,” his song, along with a music video. The Spotify version, which lasts 4:58 minutes as opposed to the 2:30 minutes of the video, is roughly half as long as the one presented on YouTube. Gemini Rights, his second studio album, was released on July 15, 2022. He played “Bad Habit” and “Helmet” on Saturday Night Live on November 5, 2022.
