American actress Stephanie Beatriz was born on February 10, 1981. She is well-known for her roles as Detective Rosa Diaz and Mirabel Madrigal in the Disney feature Encanto and the Fox/NBC comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013–2021).
In addition to recurring as Gloria’s sister Sonia in the ABC comedy series Modern Family, Beatriz had small appearances in the police dramas The Closer and Southland.
She started as Detective Rosa Diaz in the 2013 season of the Fox and NBC action comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which centers on the officers of a Brooklyn police precinct. She was the director of the “He Said, She Said” episode from season 6 of the show, which had eight seasons total.
Jessica M. Thompson wrote and directed the independent feature film The Light of the Moon, in which Beatriz played Bonnie. The movie had its world premiere at the 2017 South by Southwest Film Festival, where it took up the Narrative Feature Competition Audience Award. Beatriz received overwhelmingly positive reviews for her performance, with The Hollywood Reporter praising her for “offering a powerful… unflinching, authentic performance,” and Variety praising her for her “expertly balanced and judged” portrayal of Gina Cazador on BoJack Horseman from 2018 to 2019.
She will be included in the 2021 motion picture version of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony Award-winning musical In the Heights, which was confirmed in 2019. Her second partnership with Miranda this year saw her lend her voice to Mirabel Madrigal, the lead character in the Disney animated film Encanto.
The 2019 National Hispanic Media Coalition Impact Awards’ masters of ceremonies were Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-star Melissa Fumero and Beatriz.
In the Texas Rangers-focused crime procedural podcast Tejana in 2021, Beatriz provided the voice for the main character. She is also Tejana’s executive producer, and as of November 2021, she was planning to create a TV show based on the characters. She also hosted Wondery’s Twin Flames, a podcast about a dating cult, and starred in the sci-fi thriller Solar.
