American rock group Steely Dan was established in New York City in 1971 by Walter Becker (guitars, bass, backing vocals) and Donald Fagen (keyboards, lead vocals). The band’s roster was consistent at first, but in 1974 Becker and Fagen decided to stop playing live and focus solely on recording, choosing to work with a rotating cast of session players. They have been dubbed “the ideal musical antiheroes for the seventies” by Rolling Stone.
They entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in March 2001 and have sold more over 40 million albums globally. On their list of the 100 Greatest Musical Artists of All Time, VH1 put Steely Dan at No. 82. They were voted No. 15 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 20 best musical partnerships ever.
