Park Jae-sang (born December 31, 1977) is a South Korean singer, rapper, songwriter, and record producer better known as Psy (stylized in all caps as PSY). Psy is well-known in the United States for his amusing videos and stage routines, as well as globally for his popular tune “Gangnam Style.” The song’s refrain was included in The Yale Book of Quotations as one of the year’s most famous quotations.
On December 21, 2012, his music video for “Gangnam Style” surpassed one billion views on YouTube, making it the first video in the website’s history to do so. Psy was afterward dubbed the “King of YouTube” by the media. With almost 4 billion views as of March 2022, it is the eighth most viewed video on YouTube.
Psy’s ascension from unknown outside of South Korea to “Viral Star of 2012” was noticed by MTV in December 2012. On December 31, 2012, Psy performed onstage with American rapper MC Hammer in Times Square, New York City, in front of a live audience of over a million people in a worldwide televised New Year’s Eve celebration. After leaving YG Entertainment in 2018, he established his own firm, P Nation, in 2019.
