Nightwish is a Kitee-based Finnish symphonic metal band. Tuomas Holopainen, main songwriter and keyboardist, guitarist Emppu Vuorinen, and former lead vocalist Tarja Turunen founded the band in 1996. After the publication of their debut album, Angels Fall First, the band quickly added drummer Jukka Nevalainen and bassist Sami Vänskä. (1997). Vänskä was replaced in 2001 by Marko Hietala, who also assumed the male vocalist role formerly held by Holopainen or guest vocalists.

Once, the band’s breakthrough album in the United States has sold over one million copies. To promote their North American tour, their biggest US hit single, “Wish I Had an Angel” (2004), garnered MTV airtime and was placed on three US film soundtracks. Before Turunen’s departure in October 2005, the band released three additional singles and two music videos for Once, as well as a re-recording of “Sleeping Sun” for the compilation album Highest Hopes: The Best of Nightwish (2005). Her final appearance with Nightwish was during a concert for the live album/DVD End of an Era.
