A rapper and singer-songwriter from Mexico, Natanael Cano was born on May 1, 2001. His distinctive fusion of American hip-hop music with conventional Mexican corridos is what makes him most well-known. Cano stands notable since he was the first artist to publicly combine this variety of the two genres. Corridos tumbados is the name given to this subgenre. Dan Sanchez, who wrote Natanael’s debut corrido tumbado, “Soy El Devil,” had the idea to combine the two styles.
Cano began his career by mostly uploading guitar cover videos to YouTube. Later, he expanded into performing in underground venues. In March 2019, Cano joined the urban regional Mexican label Rancho Humilde, based in Los Angeles. Jimmy Humilde, the label’s creator, was seeking to recruit more urban regional corridos singers. In early 2019, after seeing Cano on an Instagram video, he made the decision to fly Cano to Los Angeles and ultimately sign him. Cano is continually reminded by Humilde that he “can achieve great things if he doesn’t get lost in the way,” which keeps him grounded.
Apple Music and Warner Music Latin both have affiliations with Cano. Cano was the first musician to fuse this variant of the two genres together which has made him stand out, which has led him to be the first Mexican to be recognized as the artist of the month through Apple Music Up Next, “a show aimed at discovering rising stars that in previous years advanced several of today’s top talents”. This achievement on Apple’s massive platform demonstrates that Cano, who is just nineteen years old, has sold 300 million songs since his debut in 2019 and is the top regional Mexican artist in his genre.
