Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones (/nsr/; born September 14, 1973) is an American rapper better known by his stage name Nas (/nz/). He is recognized as one of the best rappers of all time, with roots in East Coast hip hop. Jones, the son of jazz musician Olu Dara, began his musical career in 1989 under the alias “Nasty Nas” and made demos for Large Professor. He was later featured on the Main Source song “Live at the Barbeque” in 1991.

The Source named him second on their list of the “Top 50 Lyricists of All Time” in 2012. Nas was placed fourth on MTV’s list of the “Hottest MCs in the Game” in 2013. About.com named him #1 on their list of the “50 Greatest MCs of All Time” in 2014, and a year later, Nas was listed on the “10 Best Rappers of All Time” list by Billboard. He also has his own record label and is the associate publisher of Mass Appeal magazine as well as the co-founder of Mass Appeal Records. Since 1994, Nas has released fifteen studio albums, ten of which have been certified gold, platinum, or multi-platinum in the United States.
