Marc Craig Cohn, born July 5, 1959, is a singer-songwriter and musician from the United States. In 1992, he received the Grammy Award for Best New Artist. Cohn is best known for the Top 40 hit “Walking in Memphis” off his eponymous 1991 album.
Marc Cohn, Cohn’s First Solo Album, was released in February 1991. The smash tune “Walking in Memphis” was nominated for Song of the Year and Best Pop Vocal at the 34th Annual Grammy Awards. The song is personal, recounting Cohn’s trip to Memphis, Tennessee, in 1985. Walking in Memphis peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1991. That is his only hit in the Top 40.
Cohn performed in Carnegie Hall in 2019 as part of “The Music of Van Morrison,” a fundraiser concert for music education programs in New York City schools. Patti Smith, Glen Hansard, Bettye LaVette, Blind Boys of Alabama, and Josh Ritter were among the other performers. Cohn and Miley Cyrus performed “Walking in Memphis” during the 2019 Memphis in May Festival as part of the “More Together” Facebook campaign. “Memphis Walking” was also the subject of a national ad for the “More Together” campaign. On August 9, 2019, Cohn released Work to Do, a duet with the Blind Boys of Alabama.
