Madness is an English ska and pop group that was founded in 1976 and is based in Camden Town, North London. They are one of the most well-known bands from the two-tone ska resurgence of the late 1970s and early 1980s, and they still perform with six of the original line-up’s original seven members. Madness’s most prosperous years were 1980 to 1986, during which time their songs appeared on the UK Singles Chart for a total of 214 weeks. (UB40 shared the same number of weeks, the largest for any British group in the decade, but over a longer period.)

In addition to “One Step Beyond,” “Baggy Trousers,” and “It Must Be Love,” Madness has had 15 singles chart in the UK’s top 10, one record hit number one in the UK (“House of Fun”), and two singles reach number one in Ireland (“House of Fun” and “Wings of a Dove”). Their best US success, “Our House,” peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100. The band was given the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song Collection by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors in 2000.
