French electronic music collective M83 was founded in Antibes in 1999 and is now located in Los Angeles. Nicolas Fromageau and Anthony Gonzalez, two multi-instrumentalists who had previously formed a duet, broke up soon after touring in support of their second album Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts. Gonzalez, who serves as the principal songwriter and lead vocalist for the project, is still the only constant. The group has eight studio albums to their credit, two soundtracks, and the Grammy Award-nominated Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming. Gonzalez uses a lot of different guest musicians when recording alone. The group has a deal with Mute Records, and their hit “Midnight City” helped them break breakthrough in 2011. Shoegaze, ambient, new wave, and dream pop have all been used to characterize their sound.
