Initially mastering the tricky practice of self-promotion through a Nicki Minaj fan account called NasMaraj Maraj, which is Nicki’s actual last name. His viral tweets pushed him onto the public platform, and that account launched several others, such as FactsAboutNM and viewsfromnas. In 2018, Nas started his musical career by putting out music on the web streaming service SoundCloud. Nas invented the County-Rap/Trap music genre, which was well-liked by listeners. His popular song Old Town Road was published in December 2018 and is also available on Sound Cloud. Early in 2019, the song became extremely popular in part because of the media app TikTok and the Yeehaw Challenge, which helped him reach a larger audience. Old Town Road debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at position 83 and eventually reached the top spot. Additionally, it debuted at number 36 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop charts and, controversially, number 19 on the Hot Country Songs chart. Despite receiving a lot of criticism, Billboard later pulled it from the Hot Country list because it did not sufficiently incorporate characteristics of contemporary country music. Billy Ray Cyrus, a giant of country music and the father of Miley Cyrus, defended Lil Nas X in a tweet. Later, Billy Ray appeared on a remix of the song. Despite the controversy, Lil Nas has now officially surpassed Drake’s previous record for the most US streams in a single week in April 2019.
