American rock group Kings of Leon was founded in 1999 in Nashville, Tennessee. Brothers Caleb, Nathan, and Jared Followill, as well as their cousin Matthew Followill, make up the band.
Early music by the band was a fusion of Southern rock, garage rock, and blues, but as they progressed, they added other genres and developed a more alternative rock-based sound. With nine Top 40 singles, two BRIT Awards, and three albums that reached the top five of the UK Albums Chart during that time period, Kings of Leon first found success in the UK. Because of the Times, their third album peaked at No. 1.
The band enjoyed chart success in the US with Only by the Night’s release in September 2008. On the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart, the tracks “Sex on Fire,” “Use Somebody,” and “Notion” all reached the top spot. In addition to becoming the best-selling album of 2008 in Australia, the album was their first to be certified platinum in the US and sold platinum nine times. Come Around Sundown, the group’s fifth album was made available on October 18, 2010. On September 24, 2013, their sixth album, Mechanical Bull, was made available. Walls, their seventh studio album, was released on October 14, 2016, and When You See Yourself, their eighth studio album, was released on March 5, 2021. In 2010, “Use Somebody” won Record of the Year for the group, which has won 4 Grammy Awards out of 12 nominations.
