Khruangbin is a Houston, Texas-based musical trio. Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald “DJ” Johnson Jr. on drums make up the band.
The band is noted for fusing global musical elements such as vintage soul, dub, rock, and psychedelia. Their debut studio album, The Universe Smiles Upon You (2015), is inspired by Thai music from the 1960s, notably Luk thung, while their second album, Con Todo el Mundo (2018), is inspired by Spain and the Middle East, specifically Iran. Speer, Lee, and DJ are also the hosts of the “AirKhruang” radio broadcasts on NTS Radio and Facebook Live. In September 2022, the band collaborated with Vieux Farka Touré to create the album Ali, which featured songs by Vieux’s father, Ali Farka Touré.
