Junior Vasquez (born Donald Gregory Mattern on August 24, 1949) is a DJ, record producer, and remixer from the United States. He has been described as one of the few DJs of his generation to achieve international acclaim.
Mattern traveled to New York City as a 25-year-old with dreams of becoming a fashion designer, temporarily attending the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), and working as a hairdresser. Mattern got obsessed with New York City nightlife, particularly the work of DJ Larry Levan at the Paradise Garage. Despite his Italian and German ancestors, he used the alias “Junior Vasquez” (inspired by the Latino neighborhoods he frequented) to “reinvent” himself.
In the 1980s, he began his career as a music producer. Vasquez collaborated with DJ and pop remixer/producer Shep Pettibone on various hits by singers such as Madonna, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, MC Hammer, Prince, Pet Shop Boys, and others. Vasquez secured a brief engagement at Club Bassline, where he established himself as a live DJ.
