Kendrick Jeru Davis (born February 14, 1972), often known as Jeru the Damaja, is a rapper and record producer from the United States. He is most known for his 1993 hit “Come Clean” off his debut album, The Sun Rises in the East, which the editors of About.com named one of the 100 greatest hip-hop albums of all time. He has collaborated extensively with Gang Starr’s Guru and DJ Premier, whom he has known since high school.
Davis debuted his own flair to fans with “I’m the Man,” a cut from Gang Starr’s 1992 album Daily Operation. The next year, he released his first single, “Come Clean,” produced by DJ Premier, which became an underground hit.
Davis’ debut album, The Sun Rises in the East, was released in 1994 and was totally produced by DJ Premier. The album was well-received but was condemned by the Fugees for its lyrics, particularly for the song “Da Bichez”. Fugees member Pras gently acknowledged Jeru in the track “Zealots”, off the group’s landmark 1996 album The Score, with the lyric “No matter who you damage, you’re still a false prophet”, referencing Jeru’s record “You Can’t Stop the Prophet”. Jeru answered softly at the entrance of the single “Me or the Papes” and also on the track “Black Cowboys”.
