GoGo Penguin is a Manchester-based English band led by pianist Chris Illingworth, bassist Nick Blacka, and drummer Jon Scott.
On December 6, 2021, the band announced Rob Turner’s departure via Bandsintown and other social media outlets, citing artistic differences. Scott was revealed to be Turner’s replacement.
Breakbeats, minimalist piano melodies, powerful basslines, electronica-inspired rhythms, and anthemic riffs characterize the band’s sound. They write and perform as a group. Their music is influenced by electronica, trip-hop, jazz, rock, and classical music.
GoGo Penguin’s music has been compared to that of Esbjörn Svensson Trio, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Massive Attack, Brian Eno, modern classical composers Shostakovich and Debussy, and current minimal music composers such as Philip Glass.
