Norman Quentin Cook (born Quentin Leo Cook on July 16, 1963), better known as Fatboy Slim, is an English musician, DJ, and record producer who helped popularize the big beat genre in the 1990s. Cook was the bassist for Hull-based indie rock band the Housemartins, who had a UK number-one single with their a cappella cover of “Caravan of Love” in the 1980s. Following the dissolution of the Housemartins, Cook formed the electronic band Beats International in Brighton, which released the number-one single “Dub Be Good to Me.” He next had minor roles in Freak Power, Pizzaman, and the Mighty Dub Katz.
Cook changed his moniker to Fatboy Slim in 1996 and published Better Life Through Chemistry to critical acclaim. Follow-up albums You’ve Gone a Long Way, Baby, Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars, and Palookaville, as well as songs “The Rockafeller Skank,” “Thank You,” “Right Here, Right Now,” “Weapon of Choice,” and “Fantastic Night,” were commercial and critical successes. Cook co-founded the Brighton Port Authority with a number of other prominent artists, including David Byrne, in 2008. He has remixed for Cornershop, the Beastie Boys, A Tribe Called Quest, Groove Armada, and Wildchild.
