Erick Sermon is an American rapper, singer, and record producer who was born on November 25, 1968. He is most recognized for his producing talents and for being one of the three members of the 1980s–1990s hip-hop ensemble EPMD with DJ Scratch and PMD.
Sermon began his career in 1986 as a musician and producer for the hip-hop group EPMD. In 1993, he started making solo albums for Def Jam. In 1997, he returned to EPMD. Sermon, Murray, and Redman recorded a cover of “Rapper’s Delight” by the Sugarhill Gang the next year. 1999 saw the second dissolution of EPMD.
Sermon and Smith launched their own record label, EP Records, at the beginning of 2008. EP Records is sold through RBS/Universal Music Group. We Mean Business, the seventh EPMD album, was released in December 2008.
The final episode of Yo! included Sermon. In a freestyle session hosted by MTV Raps, artists like Rakim, KRS-One, Chubb Rock, MC Serch, and Craig Mack performed. In 2018, Sermon collaborated with broadcaster Ryan Verneuille and Mr. Cheeks of the Lost Boyz to serve as executive producer of their FM radio show, “The Ryan Show.”
