Elvis Costello (born Declan Patrick MacManus OBE on August 25, 1954) is an English singer-songwriter and record producer. He has received numerous prizes over his career, including a Grammy Award in 2020, and has been nominated twice for the Brit Award for Best British Male Artist. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. Rolling Stone ranked Costello 80th on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time in 2004.
Costello began his career in the early 1970s as a member of London’s pub rock scene and later became connected with the first wave of British punk and new wave movements that erupted in the mid-to-late 1970s. In 1977, he released his critically praised debut album, My Goal Is True. He joined the Attractions as his support band shortly after recording it. This Year’s Model, his second album, was published in 1978 and was named number 11 on Rolling Stone’s list of the finest albums from 1967 to 1987. Armed Forces, his third album, was published in 1979 and featured his highest-charting hit, “Oliver’s Army” (number 2 in the UK).
Costello and the Attractions toured and recorded together for nearly a decade before splitting in 1986 due to creative differences. Much of Costello’s subsequent work has been as a solo artist, though reunions with Attractions members have been credited to the group over the years. Costello’s lyrics make extensive use of a large vocabulary and frequent wordplay. His music has relied on many varied genres; one critic described him as a “pop encyclopedia”, able to “reinvent the past in his own image”. His touring ensemble (including a changing cast of musicians) has been known as the Imposters since 2002.
Costello co-wrote numerous original songs for films, including “God Give Me Strength” from Grace of My Heart (1996, with Burt Bacharach) and “The Scarlet Tide” from Cold Mountain (both with Burt Bacharach) (2003, with T-Bone Burnett). Elvis was nominated for the Oscar Award for Best Original Song and the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media for the latter (together with Burnett).
