Doja Cat, whose real name is Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini (born October 21, 1995), is a rapper and singer from the United States. She was reared and born in Los Angeles, California, and as a teenager started creating and posting music on SoundCloud. At the age of 17, she earned a combined record deal with Kemosabe and RCA Records after their interest in her song “So High” led to the release of her debut EP, Purrr! in 2014.
Doja Cat, dubbed “a proficient technical rapper with a great melodic sensibility and a powerful visual presence” by The Wall Street Journal, is well-known for producing music videos and songs that become popular on social media platforms like TikTok. She is renowned for her absurdly humorous persona and online presence and is well-versed in internet culture. Doja Cat has won numerous awards throughout her career, including three MTV Video Music Awards, five Billboard Music Awards, five American Music Awards, and one Grammy Award from sixteen nominations.
Doja Cat’s first EP, Purrr!, was released in August 2014. referred to by The Fader as “spacey, eastern-influenced R&B.” Prior to the EP’s release, “So High” was repackaged and made available as her solo commercial debut single. The song later appeared in the Fox series Empire in the third episode of the first season. Doja Cat temporarily signed with OG Maco’s label, OGG, in the middle of 2015. Maco and Doja Cat worked together on the song “Monster” off Maco’s 2017 mixtape, Children of The Rage, in the months after the signing. She had begun to experience writer’s block, which prompted her to turn down American singer Billie Eilish’s invitation to appear on what would later become “Bellyache,” which became one of 2017’s most successful singles.
