One-third of the hip hop group De La Soul, American rapper, producer, and DJ Vincent Lamont Mason Jr. was born on March 24, 1970. Mason is also known by the names Maseo, Plug Three, and P.A. Pasemaster Mase.
When Mason joined the duo to establish De La Soul in 1987, Kelvin Mercer and David Jude Jolicoeur (a.k.a. “Posdnuos,” “Plug One,” “Plug Wonder Why,” and “Mercenary”) were already close friends. With a demo recording of “Plug Tunin’,” the group caught Prince Paul’s interest while he was still a member of Stetsasonic. Mason and his associates obtained a record deal with the Tommy Boy label thanks to Paul, who also produced their debut album, 3 Foot High and Rising.
Mason’s primary function in De La Soul is as a DJ, and he describes himself as “a b-boy to my heart,” gaining inspiration from his own life experiences and current events on a worldwide scale. However, Mason has also featured as a vocalist on songs such as “Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)” (from De La Soul Is Dead) and for De La Soul’s guest appearance on the Jungle Brothers recording, “Doin’ Our Own Dang”. For “Feel Good Inc.,” a song by De La Soul and Gorillaz, Mason also recorded the opening chuckle.
Mase is a part of the Spitkicker collective, a group of creative individuals who publish the works of Spitkicker artists and take part in social activity.
