Die Antwoord (pronounced [di antvurt], Afrikaans for “The Answer”) is a South African alternative hip-hop group founded in 2008 in Cape Town.
Watkin Tudor “Ninja” Jones and Anri “Yolandi Visser” du Toit, a male/female duo, and producers HITEK5000 and Lil2Hood make up the group. Their image is inspired by the South African counterculture movement Zef and includes work by other artists affiliated with the movement, such as photographer Roger Ballen.
Die Antwoord has achieved mainstream success all around the world. Their albums and songs have charted in the top 50, if not the top 10, in Europe, North America, and Australia. Their music has also appeared in best-selling video games from the Far Cry franchise. “Enter the Ninja,” one of their early songs, went a success in Australia and the United Kingdom, but subsequent tracks like “Pitbull Terrier” and “Ugly Boy” did well in the United States. Their 2016 record charted higher in practically every country than their previous 2014 album.
In recent years, the group has been embroiled in a number of issues involving allegations of child abuse, sexual assault, and hate crimes.
