The American alternative metal group Deftones was founded in Sacramento, California, in 1988. They were founded by Dominic Garcia (drums), Stephen Carpenter (guitar), Chino Moreno (vocals, guitar), and Abe Cunningham (bass). The band’s line-up changed frequently throughout their first five years, but settled in 1993 after Cunningham returned after leaving in 1990; at this point, Chi Cheng was the bassist. Save for the addition of keyboardist and turntablist Frank Delgado in 1999, the lineup stayed the same for fifteen years. Some journalists have referred to the band as “the Radiohead of metal” due to its experimental style.
