Deborah Ann Gibson, an American singer-songwriter, record producer, and actor, was born on August 31, 1970. Out of the Blue, Gibson’s debut album became a number of international singles and was later awarded triple platinum status by the Recording Industry Association of America. Gibson became the first teenage female artist to compose, produce, and perform a Billboard Hot 100 number-one hit with one of her singles, “Foolish Beat.” “Lost in Your Eyes” from Gibson’s double-platinum second album Electric Youth (1989) became another U.S. number-one smash. All of Gibson’s singles that have been in the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 were written by just her. In 1989, she shared the ASCAP award for Songwriter of the Year with Bruce Springsteen.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Gibson kept making and releasing songs. She and Jordan Knight collaborated on the song “Say Goodbye,” which peaked at number 24 on the U.S. adult contemporary chart, in 2006. In 2017, she and Sir Ivan’s duet “I Am Peaceman” was her highest-charting hit in more than 25 years. After 30 years, Gibson’s 2020 song “Girls Night Out” became both her highest-charting and first-top five success. Her career has since expanded beyond music to include work in television and independent films, as well as leading parts on Broadway and in touring musicals like Eponine in Les Misérables and Sandy in Grease.
