The American hip-hop duo Dead Prez, often known as dead prez or stic.man and M-1, was founded in New York City in 1996. They are renowned for their aggressive performance style and lyrics that emphasize Pan-Africanism, self-determination, and militant social justice. The pair upholds a moral stance against corporate monopolies in the media, particularly in the realm of hip-hop record companies.
M-1 moved to Tallahassee, Florida in 1990 to enroll at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. There, he met stic.man and the two fell in love thanks to their shared love of music and leftist political beliefs. While there, their opinions became more firmly established, with M-1 developing a keen interest in the Black Panther Party.
They had started writing music for movie soundtracks and appearing on notable albums. The Game of Life (Score), their debut song, was used on the 1997 soundtrack for the movie Soul in the Hole. The 1998 film Slam used their song “D.O.P.E.” (Drugs Oppress People Everyday). They also appeared in the 1998 skit “The Rain and the Sun” from the Big Pun album Capital Punishment, and in the 1999 song “Look Around” by The Beatnuts from their album Musical Massacre.
