De La Soul is an American hip-hop collective that was founded in the Amityville neighborhood of Long Island, New York, in 1988. They have made significant contributions to the development of the jazz rap and alternative hip-hop subgenres and are most recognized for their unconventional lyrics and varied sampling. In high school, Kelvin “Posdnuos” Mercer, David “Trugoy the Dove,” and Vincent “Maseo” Mason created the group, which producer Prince Paul became interested in after hearing a demo tape of the song “Plug Tunin’”.
The group’s 1989 debut album, 3 Foot High and Rising, has been hailed as “a hip-hop classic” for its clever sampling, amusing wordplay, and humorous skits. Although their succeeding albums received praise, this is still their best commercial hit. After the Jungle Brothers, De La Soul is the longest-running Native Tongues band. The ensemble received a Grammy award in 2006 for their work with Gorillaz on the song “Feel Good Inc.”
And the Anonymous Nobody…, an album sponsored by Kickstarter, was published by the group in 2016. Artists including Damon Albarn, Little Dragon, David Byrne, 2 Chainz, and Snoop Dogg all make cameo appearances on the album. In 2023, Trugoy the Dove perished.
