Rapper Shawntae Harris-Dupart, better known by her stage name Da Brat, was born in the United States on April 14, 1974. She started her career in 1992, the year she signed with So So Def Records, having been born and reared in Chicago, Illinois. She became the second female rap act overall (solo or group) after Salt-N-Pepa when her debut album Funkdafied (1994) sold one million copies, making her the first female solo rap act to obtain a platinum certification.
She has achieved two top ten Billboard Hot 100 successes throughout her career: “Funkdafied” and “Not Tonight,” the latter of which she collaborated on alongside Lil’ Kim, Lisa Lopes, Missy Elliott, and Angie Martinez. Other songs by Brat, such as “I Think They Like Me,” as well as several remixes of Mariah Carey songs, such as “Loverboy,” “Always Be My Baby,” “I Still Believe/Pure Imagination,” “Honey,” and “Gotta Thing For You,” a hip-hop-influenced rendition of the Bobby Caldwell song “What You Won’t Do For Love,” have also achieved commercial success. Brat has been nominated for two Grammy Awards.
