Rock group Crowded House was founded in 1985 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Neil Finn, a singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter from New Zealand, and Australians Paul Hester and Nick Seymour served as the band’s founding members (bass). Tim Finn, Liam, and Elroy, as well as Americans Mark Hart and Matt Sherrod, joined the band later. Neil Finn and Nick Seymour have been the only permanent members of the band since its founding.
Crowded House enjoyed continuous financial and critical success in Australia and New Zealand during their initial period of existence from 1985 to 1996. Their self-titled debut album, which featured the Top 10 singles “Don’t Think It’s Over” and “Something So Strong,” helped them find success in the US. Early in the 1990s, their third and fourth albums (Woodface and Together Alone) as well as the compilation album Recurring Dream, which featured the hits “Fall at Your Feet,” “Weather with You,” “Distant Sun,” “Locked Out,” “Instinct,” and “Not the Girl You Think You Are,” brought them additional international success in the UK, Europe, and South Africa. In June 1993, Neil and Tim Finn received OBEs for their contributions to New Zealand music.
Crowded House has sold more than 15 million records globally as of 2021. The group was admitted to the ARIA Hall of Fame in November 2016.
