Coal Chamber is an American nu-metal band founded in Los Angeles, California in 1993 by Dez Fafara and Meegs Rascón. Previous to Coal Chamber, they formed the band She’s in Pain in 1992. The original lineup also included Rayna Foss on bass and Jon Tor on drums. Tor was soon replaced on drums by Mike Cox, and the Coal Chamber lineup was complete. They released their debut album, Coal Chamber, in 1997 after signing with Roadrunner Records.
Chamber Music followed two years later and contained the band’s lone charting single in the US, “Shock the Monkey”. Dark Days, their third album, was released in the spring of 2002. For touring purposes, Nadja Peulen temporarily replaced Foss on bass until joining permanently in 2002. Coal Chamber split up in 2003 after ten years together but reformed in 2011 with Fafara, Cox, and Rascón, as well as Chela Rhea Harper on bass. Peulen returned to the band in 2016 as bassist, and Coal Chamber released their fourth album, Rivals, in 2015 before disbanding again in 2016. They reconnected for the second time in 2022.
